Does our self-extinguishing material comply with the UL94 STANDARD?

A PS, ABS, Polycarbonate, PMMA or PVC plastic is made from POLYMER. These polymers are manufactured by major groups such as General Electric, Total, Sabic, Bayer and BASF.

To be able to compare the level of flammability or self-extinguishing capacity between different plastics made from these polymers, it is essential first to standardise the test method in order to then define a result and allow a comparison.

This position was taken by UNDERWRITER LABORATORIES (UL USA) a few years ago. Founded in 1894 by William Henry Merrill, the group is now headed by Jennifer F. Scanlon.

In 1903, UL defined the first standardised test for testing fire doors, called « TIN CLAD FIRE DOORS ».

Today UL is testing for different applications:

Testing
  • EMC
  • Energy efficiency
  • Environnement
  • Indoor air quality
  • Interoperability
  • Performance and quality
  • Reliability and durability
  • Security
  • Wireless
UL94 TEST: Flammability of plastic
The most important test for LTP activity is the UL94 test. It defines the flammability of plastic. The flammability levels are then expressed as follows:
  • HB: Slow burning in a horizontal sample. Burning rate <76mm / min for thickness <3mm or burning stops before 100mm
  • V-2: Combustion (vertical) stops after 30 seconds, and any drip can be hot
  • V-1: Combustion (vertical) stops after 30 seconds, and run-off is allowed but must not be burnt
  • V-0: Combustion (vertical) stops after 10 seconds, and run-off is allowed but must not be burnt
  • 5VB: (vertical plate sample) combustion stops after 60 seconds, it does not drip, the plate sample may develop a hole
  • 5VA: (vertical plate sample), combustion stops after 60 seconds. It does not drip, and the plate sample should not form a hole.
For your custom plastic enclosure applications, LTP offers a choice of UL94 V-0 certified materials (ABS, PS, PC, PVC). The corresponding documentation is available on request.
